The library exists to meet the information needs of all the pupils and staff in KGS. It also aims to encourage and develop reading.

KGS Library contains:

• about 8000 books in Fiction, Nonfiction and Reference sections
• 41 computers for pupil use (all with internet access) plus a printer and a scanner
• an Orkney collection
  
• a Shetland shelf
  
• a Japanese Studies shelf
• a reading area with 28 beanbag chairs
• study areas with up to 33 desks and chairs

S1 pupils undertake a course at the beginning of the session introducing them to the library. This involves working through a programme combining a PowerPoint presentation and a variety of practical and written tasks.

English classes in S1, S2 and S3 make regular visits to the library. A number of Maths classes are timetabled to use the library computers. Other classes and groups visit as appropriate.

Opening Times

The library is open to pupils:

• 8.15am-1.10pm every day
• 1.30-4.00pm Monday to Thursday

to enable recreational reading, borrowing, homework, study, use of computers, etc
outside class time.
