S1 Geography pupils will complete the following courses:
Map Work
This course will teach pupils how to use a range of map skills to interpret Ordnance Survey maps. Pupils will use compass directions, linear scales and 4 and 6 figure grid references. Also, we will learn common OS map symbols and identify landforms using contour patterns.
Pupils may be given homework worksheets to review elements of mapping and they will complete a map skills test at the end of the course to assess their understanding.

Weather and Climate
Pupils will investigate the differences between weather and climate. By looking at weather, pupils will identify and describe elements and features of weather. We shall also research and analyse data on microclimates. Pupils will then investigate and compare climate zones around the world, by describing climate, landscape and vegetation.
During this course, pupils will complete homework tasks such as creating their own weather instruments and performing weather experiments. Pupils will assessed by completing a weather assignment on Kirkwall Grammar School microclimates, as well as working in groups to create climate zone presentations.

During this unit, pupils will look at urban and population geography topics by studying the continent of Africa, and making comparisons between African countries and Scotland. Pupils will identify the main features of urban area, analyse the effects of settlement and compare population structures between Developed and Developing countries.
Pupils will be assessed by completing a poster assignment to show their knowledge and understanding of the Africa topic.
