S2 Craft

In S2 the department builds upon the craft work done in S1, the pupils work through two design and build projects, one in wood and the other in metal.

The big step that the pupils make in S2 is in terms of taking a design from brief through to manufacture. The pupils have to design a set of shelves using a particular amount of wood, working through the design process from Research and Analysis through to Evaluation. They also do this for a candleholder in metal, again using a particular amount of metal.

These shelves and candleholders are basic projects that give opportunities for the pupils to expand their craft skills and also to go through the entire design process, working from a brief with significant constraints.

Woodworking

First of all the pupils are given a Design breif then they work through the stages of the design cycle to develop a design that they have come up with this develops their ownership for their work.

The design work is done in a folio that shows the development of the project from the breif through initial ideas to design development and final design. When they have a final design they then manufacture their shelves before evaluating the final solution and how they worked up to it.
