Recycling & Sustainability.

This page is stacked full of Youtube videos all about Recycling and Sustainability. They are designed to supplement your learning and teaching. I have tried to ensure that run times are included.

To get you in the recycling mood, here's a catchy little tune suggested by Casey Spence. Feel free to sing along!!!
Kids and Recycling by Curiosity Quest Goes Green. 26min
Children are always curious what happens to the recyclables after the trash truck picks them up, or why do we need to separate all of the recyclables. This episode answers children's questions with regards to the environment.
Kids and Recycling - How to Get from "Old" to "New" Stuff  6.43mins

Documentary Unwasted Recycling and Environmentally Sustain Society. 50.54mns
Businesses around the globe produce nearly as much waste as they do product -- almost 110 million tons annually in the US alone. Washington State spent more than 500 million dollars on waste disposal, recycling, and composting in 2009. But what is the real cost to business and the community?
Filmed between Spring and Summer of 2011, "Unwasted" is a look at businesses and organizations in and around the Puget Sound who are leading the way toward a less wasteful, more profitable and environmentally sustainable society.

Published on 30 Jun 2013
Recycling is a process to change (waste) materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling) by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to plastic production.[1][2] Recycling is a key component of modern waste reduction and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" waste hierarchy.

Power2thePeople mp4Published on 25 Jan 2013
Produced by Afristar Foundation and Directed by FixerFilm, Power to the People is a documentary showcasing alternative energy and appropriate technology applications in South Africa.
The film focuses both on low-tech, small-scale solutions implemented on household and community levels, as well as large-scale national projects utilsing cutting edge innovations. The documentary outlines the major alternative energy sources: solar, wind, water, biomass and human energy, and shows examples of on-ground applications: from solar water heaters made of recycled poly-tubing to wind farms that will supply entire regions with grid-tied power. In addition, the documentary explores a range of appropriate technologies relevant to the South African context, for household heating and cooling, alternative transport, greywater recycling, and more.

The aim of the film is to expose viewers to the range of sustainable energy options available to us, to promote behavior change in regards to resource use, as well as to encourage innovation in ways that we can work with nature to provide for our needs without causing harm to the planet and to one another.
This film is appropriate for a multi-level audience, ranging from primary school learners to working adults, from educators to businessmen and policy makers.

Sustainable Homes - Freeville EarthshipIf you're like us, most of the bills coming to your home have to do with running the house. Normally, the biggest one of all is the power bill. How would you love it if you never had to have a power bill, or gas bill again? We're talking totally off the grid.Well, for one Freeville, New York couple, that is exactly what they did.
On this episode, Joe takes us to upstate New York to meet Chad and Courtney DeVoe. Chad and Courtney live in an Earthship; a completely sustainable home made of earth filled tires and recycled bottles. After watching a documentary on Earthships, and taking a trip to Taos, New Mexico to spend the night in one, both Chad and Courtney knew they wanted to build one of their own. Just three years later, they are living their dream.
For the rest of the world, the largest use of energy in a conventional home is the heating and air system. The GGW crew heads to Joe's house to show us one way he is trying to reduce his consumption by replacing his 20 year old heating and air system with one that will be more energy and cost efficient.
