Higher Physical Education

Course Specification

The main purpose of this Course is to develop and demonstrate a broad and comprehensive range of complex skills in challenging contexts. Learners will 
develop the ability to use strategies to make appropriate decisions for effective performance. They will also analyse a performance, looking specifically at the impact 
of mental, emotional, social and physical factors, understand what is required to develop it and then apply this knowledge to their own performance.  

By actively participating in physical activities, learners will demonstrate initiative, decision-making and problem-solving. They will experience a range of roles and responsibilities, and this will enable them to develop their interpersonal skills. The course also provides an opportunity to support the way that individual attitudes, values and behaviours are formed as Physical Education contributes to social, mental and emotional development.

Course Outline and Assessment

The course consists of two units which taught through an integrated approach.

Performance Unit 
This unit allows the performer to further develop and broaden their skill repertoire and through a range of activities. The choice of activities and performance contexts will be decided in consultation with the PE department.

Performance unit assessment - 50% of Final Grade
To successfully pass this unit performers will be assessed in two activities of their choice, each worth 30 marks. These performances can only be carried out once and will be assessed in accordance to SQA criteria.


Factors Impacting Performance (FIP)
In this unit candidates build upon prior knowledge from National 4/5 on the factors that can impact performance. They will learn to describe, explain, analyse and evaluate the factors and the impact they have on a personal level and also learn how to appropriately train to develop these.

Over the course of the year pupils will cover the following 5 areas:
  • Factors impacting on performance (MESP).
  • Methods of collecting information to analyse factors impacting performance.
  • Key planning information
  • Performance development process
  • Recording, monitoring and evaluating performance development.​

Overall Assessment of FIP Unit - SQA Exam (50% of Final Grade)
2.5 hour exam to be sat in accordance to the SQA examination diet, focusing on the five areas listed above. 

The exam is divided into three sections sections (total 50 Marks)
Section 1 - 32 Marks
Section 2 - (PDP) - 6 - 10 Marks*
Section 3 - (Scenario) 8 -12 Marks*

*Mark ranges can vary year to year at the discretion of the SQA.


Entry Requirements

If you are thinking about choosing Higher Physical Education as an option the following Criteria MUST be met:

  • Previously achieved a National 5 pass (A or B) in Physical Education
  • Previously achieved a National 5 pass (A or B) in English

Other qualifications or attributes that might be useful are:
  • Pass at Higher English 
  • A strong performance repertoire across a range of sports
  • Positive attitude and hard working
  • Possess the drive/application to further develop your performance in a range of activities
