In S3 Geography pupils will complete the following courses, some of which will link to topics at National 4 and National 5:
Rivers
Pupils will explore the formation and features of rivers in this Physical Environments course. This course will take the pupils through the upper, middle and lower course of rivers and their associated features. OS map skills will be improved by identifying river features. Pupils will also explore the land uses associated with rivers, and possible conflicts and solutions.

Glaciation
In this Physical Environments course, pupils will look at the formation of features in glaciated upland areas, such as corries and U-shaped valleys. Once learning the processes of glacial erosion, pupils will identify the features on OS maps. Pupils will then explore land uses such as hill sheep farming and tourism, before debating possible conflicts and then evaluating solutions to these conflicts in their case study area.

Urban
Pupils will explore this Human Environments topic by comparing urban areas in the Developed world, and contrasting these with urban areas in the Developing world. Pupils will contrast the case studies of Glasgow and Mumbai, exploring the land use zones, traffic congestion and living conditions.

Climate Change
This is an example of a possible topic for Global Issues at National 5. Pupils will research the features and impacts of climate change, before learning about the physical and human causes that lead to climate change. Then we will examine the possible management strategies at local, national and worldwide levels.

Fieldwork
Pupils will then complete a fieldwork topic to learn about both physical geography techniques and human geography techniques. This will allow pupils to learn techniques that they may wish to use in their National 4 and National 5 coursework next year.
