SCHOOL CLOSURE TASKS

FORCED PERSPECTIVE CHALLENGE

Picture

To mark the last week of S1 and S2 the KGS Design and Technology Department want you to do something fun as your weekly task. We are asking all S1's and S2's to take a picture using forced perspective, playing with the fact that things that are closer look bigger than things that are further away. Check out your D&T class team for more details, videos and helpful examples, and have fun taking some pictures.

You can see Mr Woodrow's example here.

S1 and S2 BGE

All S1 and S2 pupils have been allocated to a Teams page.

There will be 2 tasks set each week, one for Hospitality and one for D&T.

Pupils should return work on the Team or by email to their normal teacher.

Could pupils like any Task post so that staff know they have seen it please?

S3

Pupils will find work and assignments to do on their class Teams. Work should be returned in the assignments section of Teams. If this doesn't work can be emailed to your normal teacher.

Keeping up with work is important especially for those pupils who are continuing with a subject at National 4 or National 5 next session.

S4-S6 Senior Phase

There have been tasks set on Teams through class notebooks and pupils should check them.

Any work that has been done and hasn't been seen by your teacher should be returned digitally if this is possible.

If you are taking a D&T subject next year then you should be researching and preparing for these courses.

If you have any queries then contact Mr Woodrow:

The Department

Picture
The Design and Technology department at Kirkwall Grammar School is a forward-thinking department that is focused on providing learning experiences that build essential skills for modern life. The department incorporates design, craft, food, engineering and textiles, so it is a diverse and interesting place to learn.

We cover subjects that are focused on the creation of items that solve problems, like:

  • 3D designed products
  • 2D/3D designed graphics
  • Crafted products in Wood or Metal
  • Food that has been combined to create healthy meals
  • Engineered products or Solutions
  • Fashion or textile products

To do this we utilise a huge range of technologies as tools, ranging from the most basic hand tools to such things as 3D printers. Our focus is building the skills of our pupils in the use of these ‘tools’ to solve problems in the best way possible.

Our teachers have a vast range of experience which they draw upon when working with pupils. We have experience from design, engineering, fine art, graphics, architecture, retail, catering, business and hospitality industries, as well as a huge amount of experience in learning and education.

Our Resources

We moved into the new Kirkwall Grammar building in January 2014. The building is state of the art and in the run-up to this we had some say in what the department would look like and what it would be equipped with.

We have 3 x graphics/design rooms, 2 x multi-functional craft rooms and 2 x Hospitality kitchens, spread across two corridors at the north end of the building (offering nice views over Kirkwall).

Our graphics/design classrooms are very well equipped to cope with the demands of modern technology. Currently we use Autodesk Inventor, Techsoft 2D design and Microsoft packages to meet the needs of pupils producing design work.

We have Vinyl Cutters, CNC routers and a 3D printer as well as all the usual machinery necessary to teach craft in the woodwork and engineering areas. All of our classrooms are equipped with smartboards.
