0011 time coding competition winner (that's 3 in Binary)
shares success with another student in coding competitions
Two students from Kirkwall Grammar school have been selected as winners from two separate competitions setup by dressCode who have the aim of raising the profile of Computing Science in schools.
Connor (S4) was selected as a winner of the dressCode Halloween Coding Competition with his entry of a spooky cat-themed game: "The cat clan scouts are relaxing in a large plain, ready to continue their quest back to their home with some very large bottles of milk. Hey wait, the ghosts are coming to steal the milk, good thing they are allergic to cats." Connor's game features good playability similar to Plants vs Zombies, smooth animations, uses original algorithms, and met the theme of 'Ghosts' for the competition. Connor is one to watch with lots of talent, and a good head for problem-solving, we hope to see Connor on the Kirkwall Grammar School Higher Computing Science course next year.

Mansie (S5) was also selected as a winner of the dressCode Christmas Coding Competition with his entry of a rendering engine that can draw pictures from text in a console. Inspired by old computer games, it used 'ANSI escape codes' to emulate the style of the most advanced games from the 70s and 80s: "Santa's skyway is an infinite runner game about Santa trying to fly through a city in his sleigh and avoid buildings, as you last longer in the game the difficulty increases and Santa gets faster.". Judges were just looking for a Santa theme, but Mansie went retro with his creation and pleased the judges with his advanced Santa creation. Mansie has previously won a Christmas coding competition in the same series of competitions with his animated Snowman, and another previous competition with his Voice recognition AI Bot based on Marvin the Paranoid Android. That makes a hat trick of coding competition wins for Mansie, who is hoping to continue his Computing Science studies into Advanced Higher Computing Science at Kirkwall Grammar School next year where he is looking for a real-world software project to work on.
Pictured are Connor and Mansie and their software solutions to the competition, as well as their prizes provided by dressCode, and their teacher Denis Soames (Computing Science), who commented: "Students were encouraged to code solutions and submit them to the competition before returning to school after the holidays; both students showed an outstanding grasp of programming and problem-solving skills, combined with creativity, to grab the judges' attention, both students have stood out nationally to represent themselves and KGS. We can look forward to seeing more exciting Computing Science solutions from these two competition winners." Both students won programmable wall art to decorate their rooms, hopefully inspiring their creativity and coding skills ready for the next round of competitions.
