Outdoor Education Trips 2017/18
S2 Trip to Hoy Dates (2017/18)
Group 1; Mon. 2nd October - Wed. 4th October (Trip Leader - Mrs Raksha Woods) Group 2; Wed. 4th October - Fri. 6th October (Trip Leader - Mr Iain Maclean) Group 3; Mon. 9th October - Wed. 11th October (Trip Leader - Mr Colin Nisbet) Each group will be accompanied by three members of the KGS staff as well as outdoor education instructors based on Hoy. Total Cost - £130 (inc. food, accommodation, instruction, transport + specialised equipment hire) Deposit - £50 Final Balance Due - Friday 29th September A trip consent form needs to be completed and returned to school before the trip. Sample food menu; Bolognese Pasta (night 1) Chicken Curry (night 2) + pudding! There is always a vegetarian option each night e.g. Marconi Cheese. Additionally we will provide a good selection of snacks, cereals, fruit juice and pack lunch options. Reminder - Pupils should to take a packed lunch for the 1st day as well as a reusable water bottle Kit List

Visiting Speakers
24/08/2017 - Scottish Universities Highland Tour; S5 and S6 students were given the opportunity to hear about University life as part of the Scottish Universities Highland Tour. During the presentation students were told about the differences between institutes (Campus Based vs City Based) and were given a useful overview of the types of courses offered at each.
18/09/2017 - Safe Drive; Members of the emergency services and other agencies held workshops for S5 pupils about staying safe on the road. Photos from this event can be found under the 'Galleries' Tab on the KGS homepage.
21/09/2017 - Safe Islander; S1 pupils attended a variety of workshops about hazards and keeping themselves/others safe around water, alcohol, farms, the internet and electricity.
26/09/2017 - 'Robertson Group Ltd'; S5 college students received a presentation from Hannah Taylor (Community Development Coordinator) about the importance of employability skills and were given examples of good/bad CVs.
10/11/2017 - Claire Irvine (PE) alongside her wonderful 'mini me' discussed "Being a Parent" with the S6. Claire talked about her own experience, the financial costs of parenthood and challenged some of the pupils to successfully 'flattened' a pram.
W/b (27/11/17) - Health Promotion came into S1 classes and delivered a lesson about 'Smoking'. This session looked at the short and long term effects smoking can have on a person as well as looking at the chemicals that a cigarette contains.
W/b 27/11/17) - NHS Dental Nurses came into S2 classes and delivered a lesson about 'Hydration'. This session looked at the benefits of staying hydration as well as the issues caused by dehydration.
30/11/17 + 01/12/17 - Kobi (Youth Scotland - Money for Life) in partnership with Cheryl Rafferty (Community Learning Development) delivered a presentation to a number of S3, S4, S5 and S6 pupils about a variety of money based topics including bank statements and tax.
05/12/17 - OPITO delivered a presentation to a number of senior students about the Oil and Gas industry and potential job prospects and apprenticeship opportunities.
December 2017 (various dates) - Hailey Maxwell (Orkney Rape Crisis) has run sessions with S5 students on the topic of Consent.
