STOPP APP
The STOPP app is a guided companion to help users improve emotional regulation, mindfulness, distress tolerance and coping skills. Developed by two psychotherapists from the United Kingdom, the app is based on principles of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
Simply designed, the user is guided through a self-helping process that follows the acronym “STOPP”. The 5 step process is as follows:
*S - Stop! As soon as a trigger is noticed, the user opens the app and starts to “stop” the negative thought pattern. During this step the user is asked to take a pause in order to put space between the trigger and the undesirable response.
*T - Take a Breath. The user is told to take one slow, deep breath. This serves as a brain reset and helps to calm and clear the mind while also reducing the physical reaction that resulted from the emotion.
*O - Observe. The user is asked to notice what is going on with their body. What physical reaction is being felt and what is the brain thinking? The purpose of this step is reduce the power and control from those thoughts and feelings.
*P - Pull Back. In this step the user is asked to consider another way of looking at what they are thinking about. See it from a different perspective or what the developers describe, from a helicopter view.
*P - Practice what works. Choose a more helpful and positive response rather than reacting. This is the step that is explained to be the behavioural change of CBT.

CRUSE SCOTLAND
Everyone experiences bereavement at some stage in their life, whether it’s the death of a parent, a loved one, a friend or a child. The experience often means that our lives will never be the same again. Sometimes the feelings – despair, loneliness or even guilt – may overwhelm us, so much so that we need help. In time, and with support, we can work through such feelings and learn to live with our loss.
