Practical Metalworking
National 4 & 5
At National 4 there are four units:
· Bench Skills
· Machine Processes
· Fabrication and Thermal Joining
· Added Value Unit: Making a Finished Product from Metal
At National 5 there are three units:
· Bench Skills
· Machine Processes
· Fabrication and Thermal Joining
The mandatory skills, knowledge and understanding that will be assessed in within the course are as follows:
· Select metalworking tools, equipment and materials appropriate for tasks.
· Identify that all tools are safe to use and in good condition, and report any damaged equipment.
· Adjust tools and machines for appropriate tasks.
· Use marking out tools to replicate working drawings and using datum lines.
· Use the pillar and centre lathes for a variety of tasks/skills and meet the required tolerances.
· Work in accordance with recognised procedures and safe working practices.
· Prepare learners to work with tools and machines for a number of trades or DIY hobbies or to progress to apprenticeships.
Progression in learning and skills
Completion of the course or its component units may provide progression to:
· Practical Metalworking National 5 (if National 4 is the level completed by the learner)
· Practical Woodworking National 4 and National 5
· other qualifications in the technologies where good dexterity and construction skills are appropriate (eg Design Manufacture, Practical Electronics)
· further/higher education
· apprenticeships and training in trades that require an understanding of engineering and practical skills.
Workshop safety
· Always listen carefully to staff and follow instructions.
· Do not run in the workshop – you could bump into another learner and cause an accident.
· Know where the emergency stop buttons are positioned in the workshop. If you see an accident at the other side of the workshop you can use the emergency stop button to turn off all electrical power to machines.
· Always wear an apron as it will protect your clothes and hold loose clothing, such as ties, in place.
· Wear good, strong shoes – training shoes are not suitable.
· When undertaking practical work, all stools should be put away.
· Bags should not be brought into a workshop as they can be a trip hazard.
· When learning how to use a machine, listen very carefully to all the instructions given by staff. Ask questions, especially if you do not fully understand.
· Do not use a machine if you have not been shown how to operate it safely by staff.
· Always be patient – never rush in the workshop.
· Always use a guard when working on a machine.
· Keep hands away from moving/rotating machinery.
· Use hand tools carefully, keeping both hands behind the cutting edge.
· Report any damage to machines/equipment as this could cause an accident.
