What is Reading Advance?
Reading Advance is a reading programme, also using the internet, which we have created to build on the foundations of your work in S1 and S2. Its aims are:
• to encourage you to read
• to improve your ability to respond to reading by thinking for yourself (suggestions for reading)
We hope it will help prepare you for your courses in S4 and beyond.
What will you have to do?
The program has three stages. Each stage involves a number of tasks which are linked to books you read. To see the tasks, go to the pages in the menu beside the Reading Advance heading. The tasks will largely be done as homework but monitored in school.
Most of you should expect to complete one stage per term, but naturally some will progress more quickly and others more slowly. On the last page of your Reading Advance handbook, you should tick the box beside each task you complete.
Stage 1
complete three tasks (chosen from seven) |
Stage 2
complete two tasks (chosen from four) |
Stage 3
complete one task (chosen from four) |
How will you get the tasks?
From the pages in this section of the KGS website. They contain:
• descriptions of the tasks
• supporting notes (including printable worksheets)
• examples of how the tasks might be done
Items can also be obtained on paper from your teacher.
A note to those at home
Research shows that the involvement of an adult other than a teacher is significant in helping readers develop. By encouraging your child, taking an interest in what they are reading and, perhaps most of all, through acting as a role model by reading yourself, you can make a difference. We would also like you to monitor your child’s progress by signing the back of this booklet when they complete each stage.
