You are the Engineers, Designers, Chefs and Craftspeople of the future. Design and Technology in S3 is where you can start to push your skills to another level as you prepare to move into the senior school.
Technology moves at a rapid rate and we in the D&T Department are keen to help you be part of this. In S3 you will find out more about the subjects and where they sit in the world, introducing you to careers and technologies you may not have encountered before. We offer four subjects in 3rd Year: Graphic Communication, Hospitality, Practical Craft and Design & Manufacture. In these subjects you will not only learn about the subject area but also acquire skills that are useful across your studies and in wider life, e.g. presentation skills in Graphics, healthy eating in Hospitality, manual dexterity in Practical Craft and using the Design Cycle in D&M. These and many more skills can help you not just be better in D&T but be better across your subjects and outside school. |
Structure of the CoursesThe S3 courses are designed to take your skills further on from where you are after S1/2. Expect to be doing deeper learning and more in-depth tasks in your chosen subject.
They will also prepare you for the senior school by using similar structures to the senior courses. Undertaking both project based and skill building tasks will help to build your understanding of the subject area. Working for three periods a week you will use appropriate technology to the subject to help gain a deeper understanding. The four subjects taught in 3rd Year support the eight subjects we deliver at National levels:
Practical CraftThe rewards you get from building something with your own hands are huge. Having a level of knowledge of wood and metal and how to work with them gives you an insight into our built environment and how people have manufactured things for thousands of years.
Why would you pick practical craft?
"Creativity is intelligence having fun." Albert Einstein |
Graphic CommunicationGraphics are all around you; they are there to tell you what to do, keep you safe, sell you things, help us understand things, help us make things and to communicate in the universal language of shapes, colour and line.
Why would you pick Graphics?
"Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that's why it is so complicated." Paul Rand (Graphic designer) Design and ManufactureThe skill of being able to design and the ability to make something well are things that can be developed and nurtured. Design is problem solving and the skill can be used in all ares of life; it is a fundamental driver of human development.
Through learning about design pupils gain the understanding of how to look at products, enabling them to become discerning consumers and giving them a good basis of knowledge about the work that goes into the design and production of artefacts. Why would you pick D&M?
"Design is like an explosion backwards" Seymour & Powell (Designers) |
HospitalityMaking good food is a pleasure and a skill. Orkney has a thriving hospitality and tourism industry that relies upon people with excellent food skills. As a place that is renowned for its produce, Orkney needs people who have the skills to produce good food.
Why would you pick Hospitality?
"We all eat. It would be a sad waste of opportunity to eat badly." Anna Thomas (Writer) |
