You are the Engineers, Designers, Chefs and Craftspeople of the future. Design and Technology in S3 is where you can start to push your skills to another level as you prepare to move into the senior school.

Technology moves at a rapid rate and we in the D&T Department are keen to help you be part of this. In S3 you will find out more about the subjects and where they sit in the world, introducing you to careers and technologies you may not have encountered before.

We offer four subjects in 3rd Year: Graphic Communication, Hospitality, Practical Craft and Design & Manufacture. In these subjects you will not only learn about the subject area but also acquire skills that are useful across your studies and in wider life, e.g. presentation skills in Graphics, healthy eating in Hospitality, manual dexterity in Practical Craft and using the Design Cycle in D&M. These and many more skills can help you not just be better in D&T but be better across your subjects and outside school.

Structure of the Courses

The S3 courses are designed to take your skills further on from where you are after S1/2. Expect to be doing deeper learning and more in-depth tasks in your chosen subject.

They will also prepare you for the senior school by using similar structures to the senior courses. Undertaking both project based and skill building tasks will help to build your understanding of the subject area.

Working for three periods a week you will use appropriate technology to the subject to help gain a deeper understanding.

The four subjects taught in 3rd Year support the eight subjects we deliver at National levels:

  • Design and Manufacture
  • Practical Woodworking
  • Practical Metalwork
  • Hospitality: Practical Cookery
  • Hospitality: Practical Cake Craft
  • Graphic Communication
  • Fashion and Textiles
  • Engineering Science
