Solihull Approach Delivered to KGS Pupils
A group of pupils from Kirkwall Grammar School have been given an insight into early childhood development to help them gain knowledge and skills that will support them in their future career.
Staff from the OIC’s Early Years team have been visiting the school to deliver the Solihull Approach for Young People - Understanding yourself and parenting. The course gives an insight into early child development and looks at how babies and teenagers’ brains develop, how relationships are built between child and adult and the importance of play as a tool for learning.
The course was delivered to 12 pupils earlier this term. All the pupils have expressed an interest in a career working with babies or young children, including becoming an Early Years Practitioner, Teacher or Midwife

Self in Society: Environmental Issues (Access 2/3) Trip. Monday 21st November 2022
The Curriculum Support RMPS group visited Sherren (a thriving woodland on the Dounby road) as part of the ‘Self in Society: Environmental Issues’ Level 3 qualification course. The group has been learning about the causes and effects of environmental damage. The trip was to help the group to continue to learn about the possible actions they can take to reduce this damage to the environment.
An action agreed was the building wildlife shelters commonly known as bug hotels, with the trip allowing members of the Curriculum Support RMPS group see examples of functional bug hotels in a thriving woodland. Many thanks to Mr David Kent (the co-owner of Sherren, and the husband of our Business manager Mrs Karen Kent), for volunteering his time to help us with this project.
