Promoting Positive Behaviour and Relationships (Mr Harvey) 2. Registration attendance Regular attendance and being punctual for lessons is vitally important in pupils achieving their very best. We use Registration each morning to monitor attendance as well as creating positive relationships between staff and pupils as well as between pupils in different year groups. Having 10 minutes in the morning where things are a little less formal and where pupils can get themselves prepared for the day ahead are really important. Please watch the short video below which explains registration at KGS and how we support good Attendance and Time keeping. https://prezi.com/v/view/mkvL1cB91bEIPwWwT2Om/ 3. Tracking and Monitoring Throughout the year we Track and Monitor pupils progress in their subjects. Staff will be entering Tracking Data for Senior Phase Pupils (S4.S5,S6) over the next couple of weeks. Parents will receive this information in a Tracking Summary Report on Monday September 19th. The Report will include:
4. S1 Pupils – slight change to break and lunchtimes Our S1 pupils have settled in well to the routine of break and lunchtimes, so from Monday 29th, rather than 10 minutes extra at both break and lunchtime, they will be let out of class 5 minutes early, along with Senior pupils and we will continue to monitor this. 5. Younger pupils’ safety on school buses We have had a few concerns raised about S1 and 2 pupils crossing the road in a dangerous way when they get on and off school buses in different locations in our school catchment area, and members of the public have reported this to us. We would very much appreciate it if you could remind your young person not to walk out from behind school busses to cross the road. 6. Orkney Careers Fair 2022 The Orkney Careers Fair 2022 will be held on Thursday 15 September 2022, in the Arena, Pickaquoy Centre, Kirkwall. There will be 66 exhibitors attending, representing a wide range of career pathways available to young people and adults in Orkney. The event will be open from 9.30am-6pm. The Guidance team are working to make sure as many of our S3 to S6 pupils will be able to attend the event as possible and more details will follow shortly once arrangements are finalised. Dear Parents and Carers Thank you for your continued support during another busy, but hugely positive, week. It has been great to welcome back all of our pupils and they have all settled back into the first week really well. We are especially pleased with S1 who seem to be enjoying life at KGS. We have held assemblies for each year group this week, so all pupils have a clear understanding of our expectations of them and the support that staff in the school can give to pupils We hope you all have a relaxing weekend, Mr Neil Ewing Acting Head Teacher Today’s update contains 6 notices:
1. Staffing Update After interviews for the Acting post PT of Maths earlier this week, Roz Mc Mahon is our newest PT and has already started in her new post. Roz will be a fantastic addition to the PT team! I am also pleased to be able to inform you that Jessica Lowrie has been appointed to the permanent post of Curriculum Support teacher and Rachael Suttie has been appointed to the temporary post of Curriculum Support teacher. We look forward to them joining the CS team in due course. 2. Drop off points Could we ask parents and carers not to drop off their children on the double yellow lines just before the bus entrance or in the bus lane please. It is causing the traffic to back up in the mornings and is blocking access to the school buses. Your support with this would be really appreciated. Securing the Best Outcomes (Joe McCall) 3. SQA Appeals Process Following on from the receipt of their SQA results, pupils who believe that they might be able to appeal a grade should contact the Principal Teacher of that subject as soon as possible if they haven’t already done so. 4. Re-Coursing At assembly this week, S5 and S6 pupils were informed that requests to change courses following receipt of their SQA results, must be made by end of the school day on Monday 22nd August. Guidance staff have been supporting pupils with their options. Promoting Positive Behaviour and Relationships (Mr Harvey) 5. Maximising Opportunities to Learn This week we had assemblies for all year groups welcoming them back to school and sharing our expectations for the year. In all assemblies we spoke about Maximising the Opportunities to Learn. The idea was that all pupils received the same consistent message at the very start of term. Please follow the link to watch a short video explaining our Promoting Positive Behaviour Poster: https://prezi.com/v/view/SdWiMVVzuVgkv0t1GvpC/ Securing the Highest Level of Universal Support (Ms Devlin) 6. New S1 Update We have had a positive start to the new school year and have been delighted with our new S1 cohort. Guidance teachers have been introducing themselves to their new classes and pupils. The S1 pupils get out early from class for the first two weeks at break and lunchtimes to give them a chance to get used to the school system. They have already had their first proper assembly and have been ably supported to their classes by our S6 buddies. If you do have any concerns about your young person, please do not hesitate to get in touch with their Guidance teacher. Dear Parents/Carers
We hope all our pupils, parents, carers and families have had a great holiday. The new term begins on Tuesday 16 August, and we are all really looking forward to welcoming our pupils back to school, especially our new S1. Just before the new term starts, I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the following areas:
Mr Neil Ewing Acting Head Teacher
Guidance Appointments Guidance staff will be taking appointments where arrangements and discussions over change of courses can take place on the afternoon of Monday 15 August. Appointments for Guidance staff can be made by contacting the school office. Skills Development Scotland Exam results support is available from SDS Careers Advisers in local careers centres. The Kirkwall centre can be contacted on 01856 872460 or by emailing [email protected]. There is also a national helpline staffed by trained careers advisers on 0808 100 8000. Further support can be found at the following link: https://www.myworldofwork.co.uk/pupils/results-help 2. Learners Guide to Appeals An electronic version of the SQA support guide on appeals is available on the SQA website here: https://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/79049.html The document will explain to pupils exactly how the appeal process will work and how to make an appeal. Appeals Service If on results day a pupil feels their result is lower than expected, they may be able to appeal that result. Appeals can be prioritised if pupils have a conditional place at university or college. There is no charge for appeals. Eligibility criteria for Appeals 2022 are in place to support fairness and to ensure that learners are accessing the service on an equitable basis. Therefore, the following criteria must be met:
The deadlines for submitting a priority appeal are: · Learner direct - Tuesday 16 August at 11.59 pm · Centres - Friday 19 August at 5 pm Results of all priority appeals will be released to centres on Monday 5 September and sent to UCAS on Tuesday 6 September. The deadlines for submitting all other appeals are: · Learner direct - Tuesday 30 August at 11.59 pm · Centres – Friday 2 September at 5 pm. Pupils wishing to be considered for a non –priority appeal, should contact the Principal Teacher of the subject concerned when they return to school. 3. Welcome to all new S1 pupils All S1 pupils will be met in the foyer on Tuesday and directed into the theatre as they were during the transition days. Here they will be met by Guidance and Support staff. A short assembly will follow, which will include a reminder of school rules and expectations. S1 pupils will also be given their PIN numbers for the cashless catering system, as well as a new paper copy of their timetable. We ask pupils to take a photo of their timetables or make copies as multiple re-prints are discouraged. S6 buddies will then escort them to their period 1 classes and be available throughout the week to ensure that S1 pupils get to their classes. S1 pupils will have an extended lunch and break time at the start of the session to give them time to get used to the canteen system. We are very much looking forward to S1 pupils re-joining us next week. 4. Pupil Support Changes Guidance Department We are delighted that two additional teachers have been appointed to the Guidance team. This means that, for some pupils, there will be a change of Guidance teacher from August 2022. The new Guidance teacher for S1-4 Copinsay pupils will be Mrs Kim Fletcher. The Guidance teacher for S1-4 Eynhallow will continue to be Ms Bridget Taylor The Guidance teacher for S1-4 Fara will continue to be Mr Mark Berry The two Guidance teachers that have been allocated to S5 and S6 pupils are as follows: 5C1, 5E1, 5F1 and 6C1, 6E1, 6F1 – Mrs Raksha Woods 5C2, 5E2, 5F2 and 6C2, 6E2, 6F2 – Mr Colin Nisbet We would be grateful if you could share this information with your child, so they are aware before the start of term.
